Inside Shri Bihari Ji Gaushala: Caring for Nearly 300 Cows Near Govardhan

Mathura: Located approximately 12 kilometres from Govardhan Chauraha and about 6 kilometres before Govardhan on the road near the Ading Canal, Shri Bihari Ji Gaushala, Ading has quietly become a place of refuge for hundreds of cattle in the Braj region.

Situated in Aring village, one of the prominent and prosperous villages of Mathura district (PIN Code: 281501), the gaushala currently provides shelter and care to nearly 300 members of the cow family. A significant number of these animals are non-milking cows, making the institution heavily dependent on donations and community support for its day-to-day operations.

A Shelter Built on Community Support

Unlike commercial dairy facilities, Shri Bihari Ji Gaushala focuses on the care and protection of cows regardless of their milk-producing capacity. This means that many of the animals housed here generate no direct income, yet continue to receive food, shelter, and medical attention.

The gaushala survives largely through the generosity of local residents, devotees, philanthropists, and social contributors who believe in the tradition of Gau Seva.

According to Gau Sevak Laxmi Kant Saini and Aring-based businessman Sanjay Gupta, continuous efforts are being made to improve facilities for the animals and create a more comfortable environment within the shelter.

Infrastructure Upgrades Underway

The management is currently undertaking several development works aimed at improving animal welfare.

Concrete roofing structures are being constructed, with lintel work already underway in different sections of the gaushala. These improvements are expected to provide better protection from extreme weather conditions, including intense summer heat and monsoon rains.

In addition, ceiling fans have been installed in cattle sheds to improve ventilation and provide relief to the animals during the hot months of the year.

These upgrades reflect the gaushala’s commitment to ensuring that rescued and sheltered cattle live in a safer and healthier environment.

Regular Veterinary Care for the Cattle

Animal healthcare remains another important focus area.

Officials associated with the gaushala stated that veterinary doctors visit periodically to monitor the health of the cattle. Routine check-ups, treatment of illnesses, and preventive care measures are carried out to ensure the well-being of the animals.

For a shelter housing nearly 300 cattle, regular medical supervision plays a critical role in maintaining overall herd health.

Support from Aring Village and Local Entrepreneurs

The gaushala receives support not only from residents of Aring village but also from entrepreneurs and well-wishers from Mathura and surrounding areas.

Special mention is made of the Kasera Family, Mathura, which helped arrange the land and infrastructure that enabled the gaushala to expand its operations and continue serving the cattle population.

Local citizens view the gaushala as a collective community responsibility and continue to contribute in various forms, including donations, fodder support, infrastructure assistance, and volunteer service.

A Growing Digital Community

Reflecting changing times, Shri Bihari Ji Gaushala has also established a presence on the social media platform Kutumb – App.

The digital community has attracted thousands of members who follow updates, support welfare initiatives, and stay connected with the gaushala’s activities.

This online engagement has helped broaden awareness about Gau Seva and create a network of supporters beyond the local region.

In the sacred land of Braj, where cows hold deep cultural and spiritual significance, institutions such as Shri Bihari Ji Gaushala represent more than just animal shelters. They reflect a community-driven commitment to compassion, service, and responsibility.

With nearly 300 cattle under its care, ongoing infrastructure development, regular veterinary attention, and support from local residents and donors, the gaushala continues to strengthen its role as an important centre of Gau Seva in the Mathura-Govardhan region.

As development work progresses, the challenge remains sustaining long-term care for a large number of non-milking cows. For that reason, continued community participation and donor support remain vital to the future of this growing gaushala.
