MathuraNow Exclusive: Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Inaugurated; 3-Hour Journey Cut to Just 45 Minutes, Decoding Toll Rates & Annual Pass Savings
LUCKNOW/MATHURA: A major milestone has been achieved in Uttar Pradesh’s infrastructure network. The highly anticipated 63-kilometer-long Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway (NE-6), connecting the state’s administrative and industrial capitals, is officially open. The high-tech corridor was jointly inaugurated today, July 13, by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. It will open to the general public starting tomorrow, July 14.
Travel Time Drops to 45 Minutes, But Toll Rates Soar
Currently, heavy traffic on NH-25 stretches the commute between Lucknow and Kanpur to nearly three hours. According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the new expressway will slash this travel time to just 35 to 45 minutes. However, this unmatched speed and comfort come with a price tag, as commuters will have to pay nearly three times the standard toll rates compared to the older route.
India’s First ‘Barrier-Less’ Expressway
In a technological first for India, this expressway features a completely ‘barrier-less’ tolling mechanism. Instead of traditional physical booths, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and high-speed FASTag readers are installed 500 meters ahead of the toll zones. Toll charges will be automatically deducted on the move, entirely eliminating vehicle wait times.
Revised Toll Fare Structure:
| Vehicle Type | One-Way Toll (₹) | Return (Within 24 Hours) (₹) | Monthly Pass (50 Trips) (₹) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cars, Jeeps, Vans, & SUVs | ₹275 | ₹415 | ₹9,220 |
| Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) | ₹445 | ₹670 | ₹14,890 |
| Buses & Trucks | ₹935 | ₹1,405 | ₹31,200 |
| Heavy & Multi-Axle Vehicles | ₹1,020 | ₹1,530 | ₹34,040 |
Important Notice: To ensure high-speed traffic flow and safety, two-wheelers (motorcycles, scooters) and three-wheelers are strictly prohibited from entering the expressway.
Big Relief for Regular Commuters: ₹3,075 NHAI Annual Pass is Valid
For daily or regular commuters worried about the steep toll hike, NHAI has provided a major financial cushion. The official ₹3,075 NHAI Annual Pass is fully applicable on this new route.
- How it works: The pass can be purchased and linked directly to your active FASTag using NHAI’s ‘Rajmarg Yatra’ mobile application or official portal.
- The Benefit: It offers up to 200 free toll transactions across national highways and expressways within a validity period of one year.
- The Savings Math: Without a pass, making 200 one-way trips by car would rack up a massive bill of ₹55,000 (275 x 200). With the ₹3,075 Annual Pass, the exact same usage is covered entirely. This translates into massive savings for regular multi-city travelers.
AI-Driven Safety & Advanced Monitoring
The 6-lane stretch (expandable up to 8 lanes) features cutting-edge traffic management systems. It is the country’s first expressway built using intelligent automated machine-guidance technology. To curb speeding, AI-powered speed enforcement cameras are active across the corridor. Additionally, emergency call boxes have been set up every two kilometers, linked directly to two separate round-the-clock integrated control rooms to ensure absolute driver safety.
