No Brahmin Like Sudama Ever Existed in the World
Mathura: During the ongoing Gaurang Leela being organized at Chitrakoot by Shri Ramayan Pracharini Samiti, director and narrator Krishna Murari presented the divine Sudama Charitra Leela. While narrating the sacred episode, he emphasized that there has never been another Brahmin like Sudama in the history of the world, and that society has often reduced his greatness to a subject of amusement rather than understanding the depth of his devotion and friendship.
The Leela began with Vasudev Ji sending young Shri Krishna to the gurukul of Guru Sandipani in Avantikapur (present-day Ujjain) to receive formal education. It was here that Krishna and Sudama first developed a bond of friendship. According to the narration, Krishna made Sudama his close friend after removing a thorn from Sudama’s foot. Guru Sandipani blessed both disciples, wishing that their friendship would endure throughout their lives.
Krishna often shared every experience with Sudama. On one occasion, Krishna deliberately pretended to forget a lesson because Guruji had assigned Sudama the punishment of collecting firewood from the forest. Before sending them away, Guru Mata gave roasted chickpeas to Sudama and instructed him that if hunger arose, he should first offer them to Krishna and then eat them himself.
While Krishna went to gather wood, Sudama sat beneath a tree. Overcome by hunger, he consumed all the chickpeas himself. When Krishna returned, he remarked that those who consume another person’s share become recipients of poverty. However, Krishna also reassured Sudama, saying that regardless of how much hardship or poverty came into his life, He would never stop caring for him.
As time passed, Sudama got married and lived a simple life sustained through alms collected from only four households. Many days passed when he received nothing and had to remain hungry. At one point, Sudama and his wife had gone four days without food.
Seeing their condition, Sudama’s wife borrowed three handfuls of rice from a neighbor and reminded him of his friendship with Shri Krishna. She encouraged him to visit Dwarka and meet his childhood friend. Carrying the humble gift, Sudama set out on the long journey.
The difficult travel left blisters on his feet. Yet, through divine grace, Lord Krishna arranged for Sudama to reach the gates of His palace. After considerable effort and persuasion through the palace guards, Sudama finally entered the royal residence.
The moment Krishna saw Sudama, He ran forward, embraced him, and wept with emotion. Lord Krishna seated Sudama upon His own throne and washed his feet with tears flowing from His eyes. The scene became a timeless example of humility, friendship, and devotion.
Krishna instructed Rukmini Ji to provide Sudama with beautiful garments and arrange delicious meals in his honor. During their conversation, Krishna affectionately asked about Sudama’s wife and inquired whether she had sent anything for Him.
Embarrassed and hesitant, Sudama finally handed over the small bundle containing three handfuls of rice. Krishna accepted the gift with immense joy. As He ate the first handful, He granted Sudama the wealth of one realm. Upon eating the second handful, He bestowed the riches of two worlds.
When Krishna reached for the third handful, Rukmini Ji gently held His hand and asked what He was doing. She remarked that if He continued, He might give away everything and leave all others as poor as Sudama had once been. At that moment, Krishna revealed to Rukmini that Sudama was the same Brahmin who had once delivered her message to Him before their marriage.
The presentation beautifully illustrated the spiritual truth that genuine devotion and selfless friendship are valued far above material wealth. The audience witnessed the timeless relationship between Lord Krishna and Sudama, a friendship that continues to inspire devotees across generations.
