Mathura, September 18, 2026: Indian Railways has officially greenlit a new rail project aimed at bolstering regional connectivity and enhancing the logistics of both freight and passenger travel. The planned 38.21-kilometer rail line will connect Mukutban in the Yavatmal district to Gadchandur in the Chandrapur district. This infrastructure development, which falls under the South Central Railway, is set to be completed at an estimated investment of ₹493 crore.

The project is strategically designed to integrate significant industrial and mining hubs. Both Mukutban and Gadchandur are key centers for industrial activity, hosting various cement manufacturing facilities and limestone mines. Additionally, the region is home to coal mines operated by Western Coalfields Ltd. By improving rail access to these industrial clusters, the project aims to streamline the transportation of essential commodities.

According to the Detailed Project Report, the new line is expected to facilitate the movement of approximately 6.08 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight traffic. The anticipated goods to be transported include coal and coke, cement, iron and steel, sponge iron, metal scrap, foodgrains, and fertilizers. Once the line is commissioned, the railway expects to operate two MEMU trains in each direction on a daily basis, providing a boost to local passenger mobility.

The new route is also expected to alleviate pressure on the existing railway network by providing an alternative to the Wardha-Manikgarh section. By offering a shorter and more efficient path, the line will help reduce transit distances, operational costs, and travel times. Furthermore, the project serves as a strategic relief for the highly congested Balharshah-Nagpur High-Density Network route.

Beyond local improvements, the infrastructure will establish a direct link between the coal and cement industrial clusters and the Majri-Nanded route. This connection will create shorter transport leads for materials moving toward key destinations in Karnataka and Maharashtra, including Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Parbhani, and Jalna.

By enhancing the regional rail network, the initiative is expected to support broader economic development and industrial growth across the Yavatmal and Chandrapur districts. Officials expect the project to improve the overall utilization of existing rail capacity while meeting the rising demand for both cargo and passenger transportation.
