Mathura, October 2, 2026: A tragic drowning incident at the historic Shantanu Kund in Satoha village has intensified calls for the immediate commencement of renovation and beautification works at the site. On September 27, 2026, a 16-year-old girl who had been reported missing since the previous night, was discovered by local residents when her body was found floating in the waters of the kund. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, leading to renewed demands for improved safety measures and the long-delayed restoration of the water body.

Official Appeal for Urgent Action

Laxman Saini, the Ward Councillor for Ward No. 48 of the Mathura-Vrindavan Municipal Corporation, has formally approached the Chief Executive Officer of the Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad regarding the matter. In a written representation dated September 28, 2026, Saini highlighted the immense religious and historical significance of Shantanu Kund. While acknowledging that a project for the kund’s restoration has already been prepared, Saini expressed deep regret that the formal tender process has yet to be initiated.

The petition notes that the lack of progress has directly contributed to deteriorating conditions at the site. The councillor stated that as the area falls into disrepair, the kund has become increasingly polluted, creating significant inconveniences for local citizens and the many pilgrims who visit the sacred site. Saini has urgently requested the Parishad to prioritize the tender process to ensure the hygiene and structural safety of the area are addressed immediately.

Background on Renovation Initiatives

The restoration of Shantanu Kund is part of a broader conservation effort involving several significant sites in the Braj region. Official documentation from the Uttar Pradesh Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad reveals that the kund was one of eight locations adopted by the TCS Foundation, Mumbai, for revitalization and beautification through a Memorandum of Understanding executed on November 15, 2024. Other sites included in this initiative are Mansi Ganga, Radha Kund, Shyam Kund, Asht Sakhi Kund, Garuda Govind Kund, Nari Semri Kund, and Krishna Kund.

A consultative meeting regarding the Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for these sites was previously scheduled for December 2, 2025, at the Parishad’s auditorium. That session, chaired by the Vice-Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad, was intended to address practical implementation points for the restoration works. Despite the administrative planning that has been underway for nearly a year, the recent loss of life has underscored the growing public impatience regarding the physical implementation of these safety and conservation plans on the ground.

Community Response and Safety Concerns

In the wake of the teenager’s death, the local community in Satoha has been vocal about the need for immediate hazard mitigation. Beyond the long-term goal of total beautification, residents have demanded the urgent installation of permanent barricading around the perimeter of Shantanu Kund to prevent further accidents. The councillor has echoed these concerns, emphasizing that the current state of the water body is not only an environmental issue but a public safety risk that requires immediate intervention from the municipal and district authorities to prevent any further tragedies while the formal restoration work remains pending.
