Government Initiates Market Intervention to Stabilize Onion Prices
The government has launched a market intervention in Delhi-NCR, offering buffer stock onions at ₹35 per kg to stabilize retail prices.

Mathura, August 28, 2026: The government has launched a targeted market intervention to ensure that onions remain available to the public at affordable prices. This initiative comes as a direct response to prevailing market conditions, with the primary objective of enhancing consumer access, mitigating upward pressure on prices, and maintaining a consistent supply of onions in the retail market.
As part of these new measures, onions from government buffer stocks are being made available for purchase at a price of ₹35 per kilogram. These supplies are being distributed through retail outlets and a network of mobile distribution points throughout the Delhi-NCR region. The Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, Nidhi Khare, officially launched the initiative by flagging off mobile vans operated by the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) from Krishi Bhawan in New Delhi.

A key component of this effort is the Kanda Express initiative, which has significantly bolstered the government’s logistical capabilities. This project facilitates the efficient transport of buffer onions from production regions to major consumption centers across the country. The program has seen substantial growth over the past two years. During the 2024-25 period, nearly 12,000 metric tonnes (MT) of onions were moved via 14 railway rakes to five different cities. This effort was significantly scaled up in 2025-26, when 86 railway rakes were utilized to transport approximately 88,000 MT of onions to 16 cities nationwide.
For the current intervention, the government is utilizing a combination of both rail and road networks to ensure the steady movement of produce. To further optimize this process, the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) has been integrated into the distribution mechanism. The involvement of the CWC is intended to support the scientific storage of the buffer stocks and improve the overall efficiency of the distribution process.
The government’s ongoing strategy aims to ensure that sufficient quantities of onions are accessible to the public, leveraging both upgraded logistics and established distribution infrastructure to stabilize the market.
