YES Program: A Path for Indian Students to Study in the U.S.
Learn about the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program, a merit-based opportunity for Indian students to study in American high schools.

Mathura, October 8, 2026: For many middle-class Indian families, the aspiration to provide world-class exposure and education to their children is often constrained by financial limitations. However, a significant international opportunity, the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program, offers a pathway for students to study in the United States. This merit-based exchange initiative, supported by the U.S. Department of State, enables high school students to attend American schools while living with host families, fostering leadership and cross-cultural understanding. According to research by Pradeep Delpuria “Maanu” and Rakesh Mishra “Nidar,” this program is designed not as a tourist trip, but as a life-shaping experience requiring maturity, academic performance, and adaptability.
Understanding the YES Program’s Purpose
Established by the U.S. Congress in 2002, the YES program aims to go beyond simple academic study. Its core objectives include promoting mutual understanding, leadership development, and global citizenship. Participants do not merely act as students; they serve as cultural representatives of India. While in the U.S., they share Indian traditions, the concept of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” and the diversity of Indian society, while simultaneously gaining firsthand experience of American education, communication styles, and community life. The program provides a structured environment where students step out of their comfort zones, staying with carefully screened host families and participating in community engagement activities.

The YES program is government-supported and merit-based, covering major expenses such as round-trip airfare, host family placement, a modest monthly stipend, and health coverage. However, experts emphasize that it should not be categorized as a “free trip,” as families may still incur costs related to passports, medical examinations, and additional personal expenses. Selection is highly competitive, with reported figures suggesting approximately 30 students are selected per cycle from India. To be eligible, applicants must generally be enrolled in grades 8, 9, 10, or 11, meet specific age requirements—such as the 2027 cycle’s date-of-birth window of June 1, 2009, to January 1, 2012—maintain at least a B-grade equivalent average, and demonstrate intermediate English proficiency.
Preparation and Application Guidance
For students aspiring to join the program, the selection process is rigorous, involving English proficiency exams, proctored essays, detailed applications, and interviews. Pradeep Delpuria and Rakesh Mishra advise that success depends on more than just high marks; candidates must display leadership potential, independent thinking, and emotional maturity. Parents are encouraged to assist their children in building a profile that includes co-curricular activities, debate, sports, and volunteering. Furthermore, academic re-entry must be planned in advance by consulting with the student’s current school board, as policies regarding grade repetition or credit transfer vary.
Official Verification and Safety
A critical warning from the researchers is to avoid private agents who guarantee selection or demand money for admission. The program’s processes are transparent, and official information should be sought only through AFS Intercultural Programs India or the U.S. Department of State. For inquiries, Roli Verma can be reached at +91 98731 19541. The AFS India office is located at R-10, Flat No. 2, Ground Floor, Nehru Enclave, Kalkaji, New Delhi – 110019. Families are strongly urged to verify all timelines, as application windows and cycles change annually. By preparing early, focusing on genuine skills, and maintaining transparency, students can aim for this unique opportunity to broaden their global mindset.
