BKU Atal Chief Amit Singh Backs Minister Over Chhata Sugar Mill Protest

MATHURA: Bharatiya Kisan Union Atal national president Chaudhary Amit Singh has spoken in support of Uttar Pradesh minister Chaudhary Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary amid the ongoing protest and demands related to the sugar mill in the Chhata-Kosi area of Mathura district.
In a statement, Singh said that raising demands and holding demonstrations is a legitimate part of a democratic system. However, he argued that the manner and basis on which such demands are raised are equally important.

Amit Singh Calls for a Different Approach to the Protest
Singh said that he has known Minister Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary for a long time and described him as a leader who has consistently raised issues concerning the Chhata region.
According to Singh, the minister’s work has included responsibilities related to agriculture, dairy and the sugar sector. He claimed that the minister’s earlier work in these areas benefited farmers and the wider public.
Singh also referred to the minister’s efforts in 2023 concerning the sugar mill that is currently at the centre of the discussion. He said the minister had approached the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister regarding the mill and sought support for the people of the region.

Claims About the Minister’s Earlier Work
During his statement, Singh highlighted the minister’s previous responsibilities in the dairy and agriculture sectors. He claimed that the departments performed strongly during the minister’s tenure and that people associated with the agriculture sector benefited from government initiatives.
These statements are Amit Singh’s claims and political assessment. MathuraNow has not independently verified the performance figures or the specific administrative outcomes cited in the statement.
Singh Questions the Politics Around the Sugar Mill Issue
Singh also criticised what he described as political attempts to use the sugar mill issue against the minister. He alleged that some political groups and individuals were using the protest for political purposes.

He specifically referred to political opponents and alleged that some people associated with the Samajwadi Party were attempting to turn the issue into a political campaign.
These allegations have been presented as part of Singh’s statement and should not be treated as independently established facts unless supported by separate evidence or responses from the people and organisations mentioned.
BKU Atal Says It Supports the Minister
Singh said that, in his view, farmer organisations are not opposing the minister because they recognise his involvement with departments connected to farmers and the wider public.

He referred to agriculture, dairy and sugar-related responsibilities as areas that directly affect farmers and said the minister’s role in these sectors should be assessed on the basis of his work for the region.
Proposal for a Public Show of Support
Singh said that the organisation plans to fix a date for a programme in the Chhata area. He said supporters would gather near the sugar mill to express their appreciation for the minister and acknowledge his efforts concerning the mill.
He also claimed that the mill had received significant financial support in 2023 and expressed confidence that further efforts would eventually lead to its inauguration by the Uttar Pradesh government.
No specific date for such an inauguration was provided in Singh’s statement. The proposed programme and any future government decision should therefore be reported separately once officially confirmed.
What the Statement Means for the Sugar Mill Issue
The statement adds another political dimension to the ongoing discussion around the Chhata sugar mill. While protests and public demands continue to draw attention to the issue, Singh has chosen to defend the minister and question what he describes as the political motivation behind some of the criticism.
For farmers and residents of the Chhata-Kosi region, the key issue remains the future of the sugar mill and the government’s position on it. Any official decision regarding reopening, revival, investment or inauguration would need to come from the competent authorities.
