President of India Celebrates Raksha Bandhan with Students at Rashtrapati Bhavan
President Droupadi Murmu celebrated Raksha Bandhan at Rashtrapati Bhavan with students, encouraging them to protect nature by planting trees.
Mathura, August 29, 2026: President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu hosted a special Raksha Bandhan celebration at Rashtrapati Bhavan, bringing together a group of students from across the country. The event featured 122 participants, including 89 students and 32 teachers, with representatives drawn from 17 states, one Union Territory, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), and the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS). Among the student group were 13 Children with Special Needs (CwSN).
During the event, the President encouraged the students to expand the traditional significance of the Raksha Bandhan festival. She described the holiday as a symbol of love that can be shared with family, friends, and trees. Highlighting her concern regarding the declining balance of the environment, she urged the students to extend the values of protection and care to the natural world. She suggested that the students tie rakhis on plants and trees to help maintain the ecological equilibrium necessary for survival.

Emphasizing that students represent the future of the nation, the President called for a lifelong commitment to the planting and nurturing of trees.
The celebration was part of a broader educational visit to the national capital for the students. On August 27, 2026, the group visited the Pradhan Mantri Sangrahalaya. Following the program at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the participants were given a guided tour of the presidential residence and the Amrit Udyan.
The students’ itinerary includes several additional cultural and educational stops. They are scheduled to visit the Raipithora Cultural Complex to view the exhibition titled “The Light and the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One,” which features sacred Buddha relics. Their tour will continue on August 29, 2026, with planned visits to the National Science Centre, the National War Memorial, and India Gate.
