Farmers Protest for Sugar Mill Continues in Chhata for 52nd Day
Protesting farmers in Chhata, Mathura, marked their 52nd day of demonstrations demanding a sugar mill, rejecting calls for an ethanol plant alternative.

Chhata, October 3, 2026: Farmers in the Chhata area of Mathura district marked the 52nd day of their ongoing protest on Sunday, October 4, 2026, reiterating their steadfast demand for the establishment of a sugar mill. The demonstration, which has drawn thousands of participants from across the region, continues to gain momentum as farmers arrive daily on tractors and trolleys to press their case before local authorities. The protest movement has explicitly rejected alternative industrial proposals, such as an ethanol plant, maintaining that only a sugar mill will adequately serve the economic interests of the agricultural community in this sugarcane-growing belt.
Solidarity and Leadership Stance
The atmosphere at the protest site remains charged, with a large tented encampment serving as the primary hub for the assembly. Addressing the gathering, village council representative Padam Singh Fauji categorically dismissed rumors suggesting that the farmers’ movement was fracturing or losing cohesion. Speaking to a large crowd that included many local women, Fauji emphasized that he remains fully committed to the cause alongside the farming community. He declared that the agitation would persist indefinitely until a formal approval for the sugar mill proposal is granted by the cabinet. The leadership continues to coordinate daily activities, ensuring the message reaches both district and state administrators.

The scale of the movement was underscored by a massive protest march along the highway, which saw a convoy of dozens of tractors, motorcycles, and hundreds of participants walking in unison. Demonstrators carried Indian flags and stalks of sugar cane as symbolic reminders of their livelihood and the primary crop they hope to process at the proposed facility. According to field reports from Raghav Sharma, the event featured addresses from several influential local figures, including Rup Singh Thakur, Abhay Singh, Ram Lakshman Singh, Lakshman Fauji, Dharam Pal Singh, Parashuram Subedar, Karm Yogi, and Digamber. Each leader echoed the sentiment that the government must address the specific infrastructure requirements of the region’s agricultural sector.
Administrative Context and Ongoing Demands
While the protest has caused significant logistical presence on local highways, the demonstrators have maintained that their actions are a direct response to the lack of local processing facilities for their produce. The demand for a sugar mill has become the defining issue for the agricultural community in Chhata, with leaders arguing that such an investment would stabilize market prices for farmers who currently face high transportation costs and logistical hurdles. As of today, there has been no formal change in the administrative stance regarding the proposed site or project, leaving the protestors committed to their encampment. The presence of such a high volume of tractors and protesters remains a significant point of local attention, with local law enforcement and administrative officials monitoring the situation closely as it enters its eighth week. For now, the farmers have made it clear that they are prepared to continue their peaceful but persistent demonstration until their primary economic demand is met by the relevant government bodies.
