How ‘Hanuman Ansh’ Film on Neeb Karoli Baba Defied Odds to Become a Hit
Director Vishal Chaturvedi details the long journey of producing 'Hanuman Ansh', a biopic on Neeb Karori Baba that has defied industry trends to achieve success.

A Long-Awaited Cinematic Journey
Mathura, August 29, 2026: The path to bringing the life of Neeb Karoli Baba to the silver screen was fraught with skepticism and logistical hurdles, yet the film Hanuman Ansh has emerged as a significant success story. Dr. Vishal Chaturvedi, the director behind this biographical project, embarked on his research as early as 2009. Over the next eight years, he meticulously gathered narratives and life accounts. By 2023, the scope of the project expanded significantly as Chaturvedi traveled across Vrindavan, Akbarpur, Lucknow, and Neem Karoli, consulting local residents and documenting oral histories to build a comprehensive script.
Initial attempts to secure funding via major OTT platforms were met with rejection. According to Dr. Chaturvedi, streaming services were largely reluctant to invest in narratives centered on traditional saints, fearing a lack of broad commercial appeal. Undeterred by the lack of institutional backing, the director persisted in his mission to bring the story to audiences, despite facing a multi-year struggle to attract private investors who were hesitant to fund a film lacking established, high-profile stars. Eventually, a group of believers stepped forward, providing the necessary capital to move the production forward.

Maintaining Integrity and Tradition on Set
Dr. Chaturvedi maintained a strict set of ethical and spiritual standards during the filming process. He argued that when dealing with religious subject matter, mere research is insufficient; the filmmaker must possess genuine reverence and faith, as the audience’s deep-seated beliefs are inherently connected to the depiction. This philosophy guided the casting process, where acting ability was secondary to the personal conduct and lifestyle of the performers. The production team ensured that the dignity of the central figure remained protected throughout the project.
The atmosphere on set reflected these values, with the entire production team adhering to a strict vegetarian diet. Daily rituals, including prayers and the recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa, became a core part of the daily schedule. A notable moment occurred when the actor originally chosen for the lead role fell ill. In what the team described as a serendipitous turn of events, the role was handed to Shobhinav Satya, the film’s second assistant director who had been working on set props. It was a change that the production team now views as a divine selection.
Commercial Success and Future Ambitions
The creative direction of Hanuman Ansh intentionally pivots away from focusing solely on the miraculous aspects of Neeb Karori Baba’s life. Instead, Dr. Chaturvedi chose to highlight the saint’s human compassion, social transformation efforts, and the profound nature of his leelas. This approach has clearly resonated with viewers, resulting in a strong and unexpected performance at the box office. Initially, the film earned approximately 1.5 crore rupees during its first two weeks in theaters. However, a significant surge occurred in the third week, pushing total earnings to 12 crore rupees.

Given that the film was produced on a modest budget estimated between 1.8 and 2 crore rupees, the financial return represents a profit of over 500 percent. The project has garnered praise on social media, proving that there is a substantial audience for authentic narratives involving Indian spiritual figures. Dr. Chaturvedi now plans to expand the project into a trilogy, with two additional parts currently in the developmental stage. By demonstrating the commercial viability of such stories, Hanuman Ansh has set a new precedent for independent filmmakers who wish to explore the rich, often overlooked, history of saints in Indian cinema, potentially opening doors for more deeply researched and spiritually grounded biographical films in the years to come.
