Landslide at Krishna Bhir severs Prithvi Highway, road repairs expected to last a month

Mathura, August 30, 2026: A significant landslide at Krishna Bhir along the Prithvi Highway has led to the complete closure of the Muglin-Kathmandu road. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, resulted in a section of the road being swept away, leaving the route entirely impassable for vehicular traffic.

Officials assessing the damage indicate that the disruption will be prolonged. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Prakash Dahal of the District Police Office in Dhading, an on-site inspection conducted on the morning of August 30 revealed the severity of the situation. Based on the scale of the damage to the road, authorities estimate that restoring normal traffic flow will take at least one month.

In response to the closure, transportation authorities have advised motorists traveling to Kathmandu via the Muglin route to utilize alternative paths through the Gorkha district. These diversions are expected to be particularly useful for travelers coming from western parts of the country, including Pokhara and Gorkha.

Two primary alternative routes have been highlighted. The first involves traveling from the Gorkha district headquarters through Bunkot, Namjung, Ghairung, and Durbung to reach Siurenitar, where vehicles can then proceed to Benighat and continue their journey toward Kathmandu. A second option runs from the Gorkha headquarters through Namjung and Bunkotghat before meeting the road at Benighat.

Tulsi Bahadur Shrestha, the Chief District Officer of Gorkha, stated that efforts are currently focused on maintaining connectivity between Muglin and Kathmandu by leveraging these Gorkha-based routes. The district administration is working in coordination with the road office to identify the most suitable and efficient path for commuters.

As part of these recovery efforts, officials plan to upgrade specific sections of the identified alternative routes. These improvements are intended to facilitate the movement of vehicles while long-term repairs are carried out on the damaged stretch of the main highway. The administration remains in contact with road authorities to ensure that the chosen detour remains viable until the primary road can be fully reopened.
