Ward 48 Drainage Issue Raised Ahead of Mudiya Purnima Fair

Mathura: With only a few days remaining before the annual Mudiya Purnima Fair, concerns have been raised over poor civic infrastructure in Ward No. 48 along Govardhan Road. Local councillor Lakshman Singh Saini has submitted a written complaint to the Municipal Commissioner of the Mathura-Vrindavan Municipal Corporation, seeking immediate intervention to address a long-pending drainage problem affecting residents and pilgrims.

According to the complaint, the main road connecting Radha City and Radha Vintage colonies has become waterlogged because of the absence of a proper drainage system. Wastewater from nearby residential areas is reportedly flowing directly onto the road, creating unhygienic conditions and making daily movement difficult for local residents. The councillor stated that the stagnant water has become a source of foul odour and poses a potential public health concern, particularly during the ongoing summer season. Residents living in the area have expressed apprehension that prolonged waterlogging could contribute to the spread of mosquito-borne and water-related diseases if the issue is not addressed promptly.

The matter has gained additional importance because the affected stretch is expected to witness heavy movement during the upcoming Mudiya Purnima Fair. Every year, lakhs of pilgrims and Govardhan Parikrama devotees from across India and abroad travel through this route while visiting the Braj region. Local representatives fear that poor sanitation and waterlogging could inconvenience visitors and negatively affect the city’s image during one of its largest religious gatherings.

In his representation, Lakshman Singh Saini alleged that he had raised the issue with municipal authorities on multiple occasions in the past, but no permanent solution had been implemented. He urged the Municipal Corporation to begin corrective work immediately so that the road is made safe and hygienic before the arrival of large numbers of devotees.

The complaint, submitted to the Municipal Commissioner, seeks early construction of an appropriate drainage system and removal of stagnant wastewater from the affected area. Officials reportedly acknowledged receipt of the representation and assured the councillor that the matter would be examined and necessary action taken at the earliest.

Residents have also appealed for a long-term engineering solution rather than temporary cleaning measures, stating that the problem recurs frequently due to inadequate drainage infrastructure. They believe that permanent improvements will not only benefit local colonies but also improve the experience of pilgrims visiting Govardhan during major religious events.

At the time of publication, large-scale repair or drainage work had not commenced at the location. The complaint reflects the concerns raised by the local councillor and residents, while the municipal administration’s assurance of action is awaited on the ground. The coming days will determine whether the civic issue is resolved before the commencement of the Mudiya Purnima Fair.
