Mathura Traders Seek Urgent Civic Infrastructure Improvements Ahead of Festival Season

Mathura, August 27, 2026: With the festive season approaching, a delegation from the Ghiya Mandi Vyavasayi Samiti, led by the Nagar Udyog Vyapar Pratinidhi Mandal, met with municipal officials in Mathura on August 24. The group presented a memorandum to Additional Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Singh and Chief Engineer (Construction) Sanjay Chauhan, highlighting critical infrastructure deficiencies that require immediate intervention to accommodate the surge of pilgrims expected in the city for Raksha Bandhan, Shri Krishna Janmashtami, and Radha Ashtami.

Infrastructure Concerns and Pilgrimage Management

Mahanagar General Secretary Shashi Bhanu Garg emphasized that Mathura anticipates over one crore devotees from across India and abroad during these upcoming festivals. He noted that the current state of civic facilities, particularly in the market areas, poses a significant challenge to both residents and visitors. Garg specifically identified the poor condition of city roads, which are marred by potholes, as a primary concern. He urged the administration to prioritize the construction of roads, drainage systems, and footpaths under the Chief Minister’s Grid Scheme. Furthermore, he highlighted that the road connecting Masani Crossing to Bhuteshwar Crossing is in a dilapidated state and requires urgent restoration to manage the increased traffic flow expected during the festive period.

Specific Needs of the Ghiya Mandi Region

Ghiya Mandi Vyavasayi Samiti President Ajay Khandelwal and General Secretary Dharmveer Agarwal elaborated on the specific hardships faced in their market area, which serves as a major transit route for pilgrims. They pointed out that many visitors utilize this market to reach the world-famous Dwarkadhish Temple and the Yamuna ghats. The current accumulation of potholes and inadequate street lighting throughout the route complicates movement for pedestrians and vehicles alike. The delegation stressed that the lack of functional lighting in the market area creates safety concerns for both local traders and tourists traveling late in the day.

Beyond road maintenance, the delegation proposed essential upgrades to public amenities within the Ghiya Mandi region. The business owners called for the renovation of an existing, long-neglected water shed, suggesting the installation of a submersible pump and an RO water plant to provide clean drinking water to passersby. Additionally, the need for clean, accessible public toilets remains a pressing issue that could significantly improve the experience for visiting devotees and local residents. The committee also formally requested the implementation of a consistent nighttime cleaning schedule, mirroring practices in other major city markets to maintain hygiene during the high-footfall season.
