Mathura Traders Demand Compensation After Heavy Rain Causes Business Losses

Mathura, July 4: Following the season’s first heavy rainfall, traders in Mathura have demanded immediate compensation, road repairs and action against the contractor responsible for an allegedly damaged road after waterlogging affected several shops in the Chowk Bazaar area.

According to the Nagar Udyog Vyapar Pratinidhi Mandal, traders suffered financial losses after rainwater entered commercial establishments. The organisation has estimated the losses at more than ₹20 lakh. MathuraNow has not independently verified this estimate.

Ground Inspection Conducted

Under the leadership of City President Sunil Agrawal and General Secretary Shashibhanu Garg, traders carried out a ground inspection from Chowk Bazaar to Swami Ghat to assess the extent of the damage.

The delegation visited affected shops, interacted with business owners and inspected the damaged road, which traders alleged had deteriorated due to poor construction quality and inadequate drainage.

Chief Engineer Called to the Spot

During the inspection, the traders called Municipal Corporation Chief Engineer Sanjay Chauhan to the site and expressed their concerns over the condition of the road and the resulting losses.

The delegation urged the Municipal Corporation to initiate immediate repairs and take action against the contractor if deficiencies in the construction work are established.

Meeting with Municipal Authorities

Later, representatives of the traders’ body held a meeting at the Municipal Corporation office with Mayor Vinod Agrawal, Municipal Commissioner Jag Pravesh, Chief Engineer Sanjay Chauhan and Chief General Manager (Water Tax) Khwaja Ji.

Administration Assures Positive Action

According to the traders’ organisation, municipal officials assured them that their concerns would be examined and directed the concerned departments to expedite the construction of drains and footpaths at ongoing road projects.

The traders stated that discussions on several other civic issues also took place during the meeting.

The inspection and subsequent meeting were attended by office-bearers and representatives of various market associations, including members from Chowk Sarrafa, Chowk Mandi Ramdas, Dori Bazaar and Swami Ghat business committees, along with hundreds of local traders.
