Food Safety Team Raids Kalicharan Mithai Wale After Viral Video

Mathura: The Food Safety Department carried out a surprise inspection at the well-known Kalicharan Mithai Wale shop near Mandi Chauraha following the circulation of a viral social media video allegedly showing rats eating ghewar displayed at the establishment. The inspection was conducted to verify hygiene standards and ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

According to officials, the inspection team visited the sweet shop after the video gained widespread attention online. Although no rats were found at the premises during the inspection, the team observed deficiencies related to cleanliness and food hygiene. Based on these observations, the department initiated further action under the Food Safety and Standards framework.

During the inspection, officials collected samples of ghewar and barfi for laboratory analysis. The samples have been sealed and sent to an authorised laboratory for testing to determine whether they comply with prescribed food safety and quality standards.

Food Safety Department officials stated that the laboratory report will determine the next course of action. If the samples are found to be substandard, unsafe or in violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act, legal proceedings may be initiated before the competent court in accordance with applicable provisions of the law.

In addition to sample collection, the department issued an improvement notice to the establishment after observing shortcomings in hygiene and sanitation. The shop management has been directed to strengthen cleanliness measures and ensure effective rodent and pest control to prevent contamination of food products in the future.

Officials also instructed the operator to comply with all prescribed food safety guidelines, including proper storage of sweets, maintenance of clean preparation and display areas, and implementation of regular pest-control measures. The department said food business operators are expected to maintain hygienic conditions at all times to safeguard public health.

The inspection has attracted significant attention among local consumers and food business operators, particularly because it followed a video that spread rapidly across social media platforms. Authorities have reminded the public that laboratory testing is required before any final conclusion regarding the quality of the sampled food items can be drawn.

The Food Safety Department further stated that any future action against the establishment will depend entirely on the laboratory findings. If the samples meet the required standards, no prosecution related to sample quality would arise. However, if the samples fail, the department may initiate proceedings under the relevant provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSAI), where penalties may include monetary fines and other legal consequences as provided by law.

The inspection has also prompted other food business operators in Mathura to review hygiene practices and compliance with food safety regulations. Officials indicated that inspections of food establishments will continue as part of routine enforcement to ensure that food served to the public meets the required safety standards.
